History

The ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot, one of Austin’s most beloved Thanksgiving traditions, started in 1991 with just a handful of volunteers and 600 participants. Today it has grown to be the largest 5-mile run in Texas, with more than 700 volunteers and over 20,000 participants from all over the U.S. and beyond.

Not only is it a great way for families to have fun together on Thanksgiving, but it’s also an event that you can feel good about being a part of–100% of all proceeds go directly to Caritas of Austin, a non-profit that works to prevent and end homelessness in the Austin community.  To date, the Turkey Trot has raised more than $5.4 million for Caritas.

About Caritas of Austin

As it has for more than three decades, ALL proceeds from the Trot benefit Caritas of Austin, and its mission to end homelessness in Austin—a mission that is more urgent than ever this year. The ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot has raised more than $5.4 million for Caritas since the event began in 1991, helping thousands of people to get off the streets, realize their full potential, and contribute to our community.

Each person Caritas of Austin serves shares the devastating experience of homelessness. Some people have lived on the streets of Austin for years, while others are more hidden, living in their car or other temporary shelters. An unexpected crisis such as an injury, illness, or a lost job can leave people on the brink of homelessness with nowhere to turn for support.

Caritas builds well-being by making sure that people have a safe home, access to healthy groceries, jobs that provide a reliable living wage, and educational opportunities to learn life skills.
