Groovy facts about ThunderCloud you probably didn’t know

April 21st, 2015

As we continue our 40th anniversary celebrations, we’ve dug up some nostalgic ThunderCloud facts and tidbits of info we think you’ll find interesting. Here are six groovy facts about ThunderCloud that you probably didn’t know until now. (More to come—watch this space for the latest!)

  • Before 1985 each shop had to pick up their bread every morning on the way to work. It was fresh out of the oven and pretty hot; sometimes we had to wait for it to come out of the oven. Fresh bread is costly and certainly a hassle (sometimes we run out) but is what ThunderCloud is and has always been: Fresh, Fast and Healthy.
  • Stevie Ray Vaughn was a regular at ThunderCloud’s store on Riverside and Congress. His usual order? The egg salad sub.
  • During the first attempted burglary of a ThunderCloud store, the thief tried to steal the cash register but it weighed 300 pounds. Guess the joke was on him…
  • Co-founder Meddaugh drew the first outline of the original ThunderCloud store on a piece of paper, and their first plumber drew on top of it. That was the construction plan.
  • A few things ThunderCloud tried and eventually abandoned: delivery, hamburgers, and “frogurt” (buying a machine the size of a telephone booth that cost $6,000—almost as much as it cost to open the first store!)
  • Ann Richards was a regular at the Lavaca store.
