ThunderCloud Co-Owners to be Honored with 2015 Harvey Penick Award

May 6th, 2015

We are honored that the co-owners of ThunderCloud Subs will receive the 2015 Harvey Penick Award for Excellence in the Game of Life from Caritas of Austin on May 14th 2015. Each year, the Harvey Penick Award is presented to a prominent leader or group for their impact on the Austin community. Since its founding in 1975, ThunderCloud Subs has been dedicated to serving the Austin community and giving back. ThunderCloud’s co-owners Mike Haggerty, Andy Cotton, Patty Sughrue, and John Meddaugh will join the ranks of many iconic Austin philanthropists who have received the award in the past including Bob Bullock, Michael and Susan Dell, Lady Bird Johnson, Sally and Mack Brown, Barbara Jordan, Kirk Watson, and the late Jake Pickle.

ThunderCloud’s major annual community project is the ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot, a tradition since 1991 and the largest five-mile run in Texas. The Thanksgiving Day event has raised nearly $2.5 million dollars for Caritas since it began, and has grown from 600 runners its first year to more than 20,000 participants in 2014.

ThunderCloud also dedicates a large part of its annual marketing budget to supporting local non-profit initiatives like Urban Roots, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, American Cancer Society, West Cave Preserve, Nature Conservancy, Emancipet, and Lemonade Day Austin. ThunderCloud also has a soft spot for first responders, local schools and countless charity organizations.
