Congrats to our 2017 Elinor Mire Scholarship recipient, Marathon Kids!

November 2nd, 2017

Congratulations to Marathon Kids on being recognized as this year’s Elinor Mire Scholarship recipient.

Marathon Kids was born out of the belief that kids deserve to live happier, healthier lives– and that we have the ability to help make that possible. Kay Morris, a self-described “middle-aged, slow runner,” founded Marathon Kids in 1995 after completing a running log for the first time. She created a program based on the idea that this same, simple concept could motivate kids, boost their physical activity and introduce them to the joy of running.

Each child who participates in Marathon Kids works at their own pace to run or walk four marathons—104.8 miles total—over the course of a year through logged miles. Last year, the organization had 180,000-plus kids from all 50 states run a total of more than 9 million miles!

Marathon Kids also has a close relationship with the Austin Independent School District. Elementary students use the Marathon Kids program in their Work Out for Wellness “WOW” time every day, supported by their classroom and PE teachers. Marathon Kids’ Austin-area ambassador coaches selected 30 exemplary runners from AISD schools, all of which are known for their high level of dedication and involvement with the program, to receive the free ThunderCloud Subs Turkey Trot entries from the Elinore Mire Scholarship.
